Houses - outside

Skiner alltid solen på en ”bungalow”?

Chapter 19

Intro

We received a question from a listener, a keen supporter of British TV-productions such as “Escape to the Country” and “Grand Designs”. He thinks it’s confusing when a room can sometimes be called sitting room and sometimes living room.

Of course, we always like to help our listeners out and in this chapter, we start by looking outdoors first. What are the names of the different house types?

In our next chapter, we’ll go inside and try to sort out all the different rooms. But now – here we have the different house types we mention in the chapter and their Swedish equivalent.

Some useful words to know from this chapter:

A useful hint from Mike:

A few things; Karina says “house” and I say “property” in this chapter. Technically, property is real estate, including buildings and land, but the word is sometimes used to refer just to a building. It could relate to a house, a bungalow or flat, etc. We also have other words we can use for “home”, such as residence (usually a larger property), dwelling - bostad or abode – boning, hemvist.

There is also a false friend here to watch out for. A “terraced house” is not the same as “a house with a terrace” – altan/terass - because then it would be a radhus.

Happy listening!

Best,

Mike Ward, English coach
